Folding@home  

  Folding@home™ connects your PlayStation®3(PS3®) to Stanford University’s Folding@home™ distributed computing network. By connecting to this network, your PS3® supports medical research designed to increase our understanding of the nature of serious diseases. This research may eventually contribute to the creation of vital cures. Folding@home™ is supported by Stanford University and volunteers who are making a contribution to society by donating computing power to this important project.

‘PlayStation’ Science Program

July, 2009

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) hosted an event ‘“PlayStation” Science Program’ for junior high school students.
PlayStation®3 (PS3®) engineers explained that computer graphics presented in games are calculated by using knowledge of science and mathematics taught in school. Attendees enjoyed experiencing PlayStation®Eye, a webcam peripheral for PS3®, and working in a group to discuss how future games would be.

 

Copyright Workshop

Since 2004 (ongoing)

SCE held an annual summer event ‘Copyright Workshop’ on August 21st for students from 4th to 6th grades and their parents (co-hosted by The Association of Copyright for Computer Software). Game creators of the ‘Ape Escape’ series showed how the games were created and the participants became familiar and learn about copyright through enjoying mini games, a short play and lectures.

 

Company Visit

SCE welcomes students from elementary to high school for visiting our headquarter office in Tokyo. As part of integrated studies, school trips, career education programs, we have various programs to match their learning objectives.

Game Study in Class

For sound upbringing of youth, SCE designs and conducts classes regarding game industry. We have a number of programs such as learning how to get along with games (media literacy) and career Education, and have been giving lectures at elementary and junior high schools around Japan.

Holiday Giving

Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) partnered with a variety of charitable organizations to spread joy to children and families in need. Organizations include ‘Toys for Tots’, ‘One Warm Coat’, ‘Child’s Play’, ‘St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital’, ‘Acterra : Action for a healthy planet’, ‘PAWS : Pets Are Wonderful Support’ and ‘Children’s Hospital and Research Foundation.’
In addition, SCEA provides employees an opportunity to match their donations for a Grab Bag of randomly selected promotional titles or accessories.

 

ESA Nite to Unite

October, 2009

The 11th annual Nite To Unite (NTU) for Kids benefit dinner and auction was held on Wednesday, Oct. 22nd at the Westin St. Francis in SF. An NTU for Kids is an annual dinner hosted by the ESA (Entertainment Software Association) and supported by members of the association and the interactive entertainment industry to raise funds for the ESA Foundation. NTU is an unprecedented effort by the interactive entertainment community to come together to celebrate the industry's continuing growth and success, while helping to make a difference in the lives of America's kids. This year SCEA donated electronic auction items, and SCEA staff members joined this event as volunteers.

Community Partnership

in 2008

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Liverpool office founded a 'partnership project' with Grandison Allotment Society, a community allotment site based in Liverpool (Walton). They carried out a transformation project and turned a dilapidated allotment into a thrivied place, where local school uses for the gardening club.


 

Mobile Learning with PSP® (PlayStation®Portable)

Since 2007, SCEE has expanded the ‘PSP in Education’ program, where PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) has been used extensively at more than 400 educational and training institutions in United Kingdom. The combination of PSP's gaming heritage and its ability to capture and to play open standard educational digital content via audio, video, and internet has made it a compelling new mobile learning platform.

Offering Job Opportunities at Asia Game Show

Since 2007, during the Asia Game Show period in December, Sony Computer Entertainment Hong Kong Limited(SCEH) offers job opportunities for the residents of Tin Shui Wai where low-income earners live in order to revitalize this district. This social activity by SCEH receives considerable media attentions and makes the front page of local newspaper.


Charitable Book Event

December, 2009

SCEH has conducted a charity program with ‘Heifer International Hong Kong’ which aims to work with communities to end hunger and poverty and care for the earth. From the sale of a charitable book written by a General Manager of Marketing Division, SCEH, all proceeds were donated to ‘Heifer International Hong Kong’ to support its poverty alleviation work in rural China.
